As a San Diego wedding photographer, I’ve learned that the “getting ready” part of the day is often underestimated. Many couples think of it as just hair and makeup time, but in reality, it’s a meaningful chapter of your wedding story. This is when emotions build, laughter fills the room, and some of the most intimate moments with your closest friends and family unfold. With a little preparation, these quiet hours can produce some of the most beautiful, storytelling images of your wedding day.
Here are my top five tips for getting ready photos that feel natural, timeless, and true to you:

Natural light makes all the difference. Look for a room with big windows, white or light-colored walls, and plenty of daylight streaming in. Whether it’s a bridal suite, hotel room, or your own home, good light creates soft, flattering images that bring your photos to life.

The morning is usually buzzing with excitement, but try to keep one area clean and free of distractions. A small corner without water bottles, bags, or extra clothes makes it easier to transition into photo moments and keeps everything looking polished and timeless.

Before I arrive, gather all the meaningful details you’d like photographed, such as your dress, veil, shoes, invitations, jewelry, perfume, and anything sentimental. Having everything in one place saves time and ensures nothing gets missed. Assigning a bridesmaid or family member to help organize these items can make things even smoother.

Make sure all three rings, the engagement ring and both wedding bands, are clean and ready. Sparkling rings photograph beautifully and add elegance to your flat lays and detail shots.

Plan to have hair and makeup finished (or nearly finished) by the time I arrive. That way, you’ll be ready for those classic “finishing touch” moments like lipstick, jewelry, or perfume without feeling rushed. Most hair and makeup teams can schedule backward from your photo start time to keep things on track.
Getting ready photos aren’t just about preparation. They’re about people, emotion, and the anticipation before you say “I do.” With these simple tips, you’ll create a calm, beautiful environment that allows your photographer to capture your story as it naturally unfolds.
